John Lewis Steele III , son of John L. Steele, Jr., Rella Beatrice Powers Steele, and Charlene Bryan Steele, born February 7, 1947 in Columbus, Ohio, passed from this world into his heavenly reward on Monday, November 7, 2016 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio after a sudden illness. He passed away surrounded by his family, listening to his favorite hymns, gospel, and bluegrass music.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda Sue Scarberry Steele; sons and daughters-in-law, John Lewis IV “J. L.” and Lisa Steele (Sevierville, TN) William Donald and Heather Steele (Smyrna, TN); Edward Lee Steele and fiancé Anita McKenzie (West Jefferson, Ohio); and daughter, Priscilla Allison Steele (Nashville, TN).
Devoted husband, father, and grandfather, “Pap” leaves behind seven grandchildren Austin Steele, Jessie Steele, Morgan Steele, Destiny Steele, Molly Steele, Marianne Steele, and Ryan Baker.
John was a longtime member of the Church of Christ at Route 38 where he served in numerous roles in furthering the work of God’s kingdom.
Outside of his relationship with God, he most treasured his family, especially his grandchildren, fishing, reading, and, more recently, adopting every squirrel within a six-block radius into his backyard.
He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Mike Ball; brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Melissa Steele; an aunt, Dortha Steele Fellure; an uncle, Robert Powers; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends Gene and Sheila Whaley.
He was preceded in death by his parents and loving grandparents, Lewis and Essie Steele of Glenwood, WV and Henry and Nannie Conrad Powers of Huntington, WV.
A visitation and fellowship will be held Wednesday, November 9 th , from 4 pm until 8 pm at the Church of Christ at 1550 State Route 38 NE in Washington Court House. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Church of Christ in Washington Court House, the Glenwood, WV Church of Christ, or the Fayette County Special Olympics. Per his request, he was a tissue donor.
Friends are invited to join the family for a visitation at Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, WV on Thursday, November 10 th , from 10am until 1pm with the funeral service at 1pm. Interment will follow at Greenbottom Memorial Gardens in Lesage, WV. Arrangements in Washington Court House are being provided by Roberts Funeral Home.
