Mrs. Leona Woodfork Winfield, a 96 year old loving Christian mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great great-grandmother went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 6, 2013. She is the last of a generation; she will be greatly missed by those who love her.
“Mommaw” was born in Fayette County, where she spent the majority of her life in the Bloomingburg community. She was a life member of First Baptist Church Bloomingburg. She moved to Columbus, Ohio in August 2007 to live with her daughter Ella Winfield. While able she attended Refuge Baptist Church with her daughter Ilo Simmons. She enjoyed fishing, doing crosswords, playing solitary and and other card games with her family. She created wonderful baked goods and delicious home cooked meals and is the last of the wild green gatherers in the family.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Pastor Emeritus James A. and Mioma Woodfork; her loving husband Harold C. Winfield; and infant son Harold A; six sisters: Edith Browder, Mae Haithcock, Martha Turney, Inez Young, Leota Woodfork, Ethel Stewart and six brothers: Walter, Oliver, John, Ivan, Ernie and Harry Woodfork and son-in-law Charles C. Simmons.
She is survived by two loving, caring and supportive daughters Ilo M. Simmons and Ella E. Winfield; Seven grandchildren: Dawn (Timothy) Davis, Gabrielle (James) Herron, Harold F. Winfield, Mylo (Cheryl) Simmons, Toni Simmons, Carol Simmons, Rhoda Winfield; 15 great-grandchildren: Tiffany, Timothy L., Claybon, Paul, Justin, Eric, Danielle, Josh, Nia, Jaquan, Tyler, Tavon, Savion, Tiona and Isaiah; 16 great great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Corrine Woodfork and a host of nieces, nephews and close friends.
Funeral Service 12 noon, Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at the Refuge Baptist Church, 400 N. 20th St., Columbus, Ohio, where friends may call 1 hour prior to service. Additional calling hours Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the Wellman-Kinzer & Godorhazy Funeral Home, Washington C.H., from 10 – 11 a.m. Graveside service to follow at Bloomingburg Cemetery.
