Nyra Faye McGowan

Nyra Faye McGowan, passed away unexpectedly on December 14, 2025, at the age of 73.

Born on April 22, 1952, Nyra was a proud graduate of Waverly High School, where her passion for helping those around her blossomed, leading her to earn a nursing degree. Throughout her career as a nurse, Nyra exemplified compassion and dedication, touching the lives of countless patients. In addition to her nursing career, she served honorably in the United States Navy, a testament to her commitment to service and her country.

Her interests extended beyond her professional life. Nyra found joy in gardening and was a member of the Fayette County Master Gardeners. She was also an avid sewer and crafter, enjoying the creativity that these hobbies allowed her to express.

Nyra is survived by her son, Preston (Aliyah) McGowan, her daughter, Natalie Burt, and her grandchildren, Sadie and Adara McGowan and Jackson Burt. Nyra is also survived by her brothers Larry (Belynda) Burton, Dalyn (Sherry) Burton, and Charles (Shawna) Burton, along with her sister, Brendee Billings (Barry Coe). Additionally, she is remembered fondly by her cousins Betty Dement, Cindy (Barry) Oyer, and Tony Dement, who were raised as brothers and sisters, and numerous cherished nieces and nephews. Her loyal companion, Sonya, a dog that brought her immense joy, will miss her dearly.

Nyra was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Thelma Burton.

The legacy Nyra leaves behind is one of love and care for those fortunate enough to have known her. She will be profoundly missed, but her spirit and the many memories she created with her family will live on in their hearts forever.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation will take place with no formal services at this time. Burial with a committal service will follow at a later date at the convenience of the family.
