Richard (Dick) Whited, age 90, passed away on November 11, 2014, with his family at his side. The world should be in mourning, for an old soldier died on Veterans Day. A member of the “Greatest Generation”, he left home, friends and family, answered the call, and saved the world.
Dick delivered newspapers at age 8 to help support his family. He graduated from Washington High School, class of 1942, where he lettered in football and baseball, and in 1990 was honored with the induction into the Blue Lions Hall of Fame for his contribution as a lineman on the championship football teams of 1939 – 1941. Quite the athlete, he played semi-pro baseball for Milledgeville.
He entered the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served 3 years in India as a flight engineer on C-87’s, flying “over the hump” to supply the famed “Flying Tigers” in their fight to keep the Japanese from fully occupying China.
He returned in 1946 to marry his beloved Stevia and fathered his daughter, Deanna (Dee).
His service to his country continued as a supervisor of aircraft maintenance at Wright Patterson AFB, where he retired in 1979.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Viola (Monroe) Whited; brothers, William and Edward; sisters, May, Cora, Mary, Fayette and Hazel.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Stevia (Shubert) Whited; daughter and son-in-law, Deanna (Lee) Moore; sister-in-law, Grace (Dave) Orihood; niece, Cheryl (Brett) Powell; nephew, Randy (Harriet) Dice and numerous other beloved nieces and nephews.
