Rodney Dale Murphy, Sr. passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in Bloomingburg, Ohio on June 1, 2026. Born on December 5, 1955, in Ashland, Kentucky, Rodney lived a life marked by dedication, honor, and love for his family and country.
A veteran of the United States Navy, Rodney served his nation with commitment and pride. His military service was an important chapter of his life, reflecting his steadfast character and sense of duty. During his military career, he served in the Mediterranean aboard the USS America with stops in Greece, Turkey, and Spain. His calling to serve continued as he began a career as a corrections officer with the State of Ohio. He excelled in the field, working on several specialized projects within the system. His knowledge, guidance, and dedication was admired by his supervisors and peers alike, which let to Rodney being honored as Corrections Officer of the Year.
Throughout his life, Rodney had a deep devotion to Jesus Christ and a strong faith in God. He practiced his faith daily, setting an excellent example for all of those around him.
Rodney is survived by his sons, Rodney (Sheri) Murphy, Jr., Shawn Murphy (Laura Tyree), and Jared Murphy, who carry forward the legacy of their father, and his grandchildren, Bethany Murphy (Nic Brannon), Zach (Hannah) Murphy, Shawn Murphy, Jr., Kyler Murphy, and Dylan Murphy—each of whom brought immeasurable joy to his life. His lineage continues to grow with great-grandchildren Ava Jo Brannon, Jack Dale Murphy, and one soon to arrive. He also leaves behind his brothers Bob Murphy and Eddie (Nina) Walden, as well as his sister Diane (Rick) Hall.
Rodney was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Thelma (Gibbs) Murphy, a daughter, Cindy Murphy Southward, and a granddaughter, Madison Mckenzie Murphy.
A service is planned for 1pm on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Roberts Funeral Home in Washington Court House with Pastor Mike Henry officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Bloomingburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 11am until the start of the service. Following the burial, friends and family are invited to Sugar Creek Baptist Church, 3263 Old U.S. 35, Washington Court House for food and fellowship.
Rodney's passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him, yet his legacy of service, strength, and family devotion will forever remain a guiding light. He will be remembered with the utmost respect and gratitude for the life he led and the indelible impact he made on those around him.
