Ruth Lee Holdsworth Connell, 90, died peacefully in her room at Huntersville Oaks skilled care facility in Huntersville, NC, Monday, November 18, 2013, after suffering from mixed vascular and Alzheimer’s dementia. She moved to the Charlotte area 6 years ago when declining health robbed her of independence.
Ruth was born on a farm outside of Watertown, TN on October 27, 1923. She was one of 11 children born to James Lee Holdsworth and Winnie Aye Robinson Holdsworth. Ruth graduated from Watertown High School in 1942. Afterward, she moved to Nashville, TN where she worked at the Federal Reserve Bank. In Nashville, Ruth met James Lee Connell of Chillicothe, OH at a VA Hospital Halloween party; he was recuperating from a serious illness contracted during WWII. After completing his post-war education, James and Ruth were married on August 14, 1948. The couple settled in Washington Court House, OH, where they joined First Baptist Church, and raised 4 children.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband James in 1986. She is survived by her 4 children: Beverly Ann Connell Huff of Madison Mills, OH, Richard Lane Connell of Columbus, OH, Patrick Craig Connell of Brazoria, TX, and Bryan Edward Connell, PhD of Charlotte, NC, as well as 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, November 22, at the Wellman-Kinzer & Godorhazy Funeral Home, Washington C.H. Pastor Bob Sholis officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Ruth will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband James at Highlawn Cemetery.
