Thomas Daniel Esper (90) passed away on April 6, 2026, in Washington Court House, Ohio. Born on December 21, 1935, in Columbus, Ohio, Tom led a life marked by professional achievement, military dedication, and a profound commitment to his community and family.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Tom served over two decades, including during the Vietnam War, retiring as a petty officer. His military service was a testament to his unwavering dedication to his country.
Upon retirement from the Navy, Tom obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Real Estate. He worked at Freedom Federal in Columbus as a real estate appraiser.His passion extended into the field of aviation where he contributed significantly as both a pilot instructor and a manager overseeing the daily operations and maintenance of the Fayette County Airport for many years. Additionally, he served as an EMT with Fayette County EMS, further demonstrating his commitment to serving others.
His affiliations and contributions enriched both civic and fraternal organizations. He was a member of the Good Hope Lions Club and held the distinction of Master Mason within Masonic Lodge 269 in Mt. Sterling, Ohio. He was also an active participant in Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 74, a Shriner, and involved with multiple community institutions including the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, the Fayette County Elections Board, the Garden Club, and was a longtime member of the EAA, (Experimental Aircraft Association). These roles reflected his lifelong commitment to leadership, community development, and fellowship.
Tom was a devoted parishioner of St. Colman of Cloyne Catholic Church, where he shared his talent through singing in the choir and was lector for Sunday mass. His interests were varied and vibrant; he loved flying, gardening, reading, woodworking, tinkering with machinery, and was known for his skill in “fixing” things. Always a professional student, he embraced learning throughout his life.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Esther (Leonhardt) Esper, and his wife of 64 yrs. Nancy Jo (Snow) Esper, who passed away in August of 2020.
Surviving Thomas are his cherished children: Tammy Scott (Hector Fernandez) of Texas, Daniel (Milli) Esper of Texas, Linda (Randy) Powers of Beavercreek, Ohio, and Susan (Mark) Holloway of New Holland, Ohio. He leaves behind a loving legacy of grandchildren—Melissa Barber, Kelly Johnson, Matthew Esper, Bradley Holloway, Sarah (D.J.) Day, Ryan (Sarah) Powers, Tracy (Brad) Wimmer-Powers, Megan (Clayton) Milner, Alissa Esper, Alexandra (Daniel) Guidry, Jazzmine (Mitchell) Eubanks, and Jade (Jeremy) Wilson - and great-grandchildren - Camden, Annistyn, Rowan, Holden, Charli, Adalina, Aaliyah, Colton, Ezra, and two soon to arrive. Thomas is also survived by his sister Patty Wolfe, nieces and nephews, and many friends and coworkers who valued his friendship and guidance.
Tom’s life was characterized by service, leadership, and the pursuit of knowledge. His contributions to his community, his country, and his family stand as a lasting legacy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am on Wednesday, April 15th at the St Colman Catholic Church with Fr. C.M. Haddad. Burial will follow in the St Colman Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 14th from 5pm until 7pm with a masonic service immediately following the visitation.Memorial contributions may be made to Fayette County Commission on Aging - 1179 S. Elm St. Wash. C. H., Oh 43160.
