Josie Delores (Thomas) Smalley gained her wings on July 8, 2021, at 9:00pm. She took God’s hand and started her journey with her children at her side.
Josie was born on July 25, 1933 in McDowell County, West Virginia to the late Henry and Roxie (Bott) Thomas. She had worked as a caregiver for a few years before beginning her career at Mac Tools, where she eventually retired from. She was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and served on the American Legion Post 25 Ladies Axillary for over 30 years. Josie loved traveling, bowling, dancing, flower arranging, and working with crafts, but she loved her family the most.
Along with her parents, Josie was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Potter; husbands, Ray Potter, Kenneth Hanscel, and James Smalley; stepson, Steve Smalley; 4 sisters; 3 brothers; 1 sister-in-law; 4 brothers-in-law; two nieces; and a nephew.
Remaining to cherish her memory are her children, Cheryl (Charles) Morris, Dennis Potter, David (Kim) Potter, and Kenneth “Duke” Hanscel; a special sister, Linda Manns, brothers, Robert (Sue) Thomas, Billy (Norma) Thomas, Andrew (Mev) Thomas, Steve (Rosalee) Thomas, Ralph (Judy) Thomas, and Randy (Sandy) Thomas. She also leaves 9 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, and the many cherished friends both locally and around the world.
A funeral is planned for 11am on Thursday, July 15th at the Roberts Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Dodds officiating. Burial will follow in the Bloomingburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 14th from 5pm to 7pm.
