Kenneth James Thompson, was born October 10, 1948 in Fayette County, Ohio, grew up on the Flakes Ford Road, made a career in the Coast Guard, and died peacefully April 28, 2023 in the Chillicothe VA Hospice.
Always known as “Kenny” to family and school friends, he was predeceased by parents Ralph Dale Thompson and Mary Evelyn Thompson, brother Zane Craig Thompson, and sons James and John. He is survived by brothers Stephen (Paula), Jeffrey (Louann), and Christopher (Susan) Thompson, and sisters Mary Lu Zock and Jennifer Thompson McKell.
Kenny graduated from Miami Trace High School. He had a 22 year career in the U. S. Coast Guard where he attained the rank of Chief Machinery Technician. He received several decorations and medals, including Sea Service Ribbon with Bronze Star, and Rifleman/Marksmanship Ribbon with Sharpshooter Device. He was stationed and lived many places, including Newport News, Virginia; Ludington, Michigan; San Diego; the coast of Spain; Arizona; and Nome, Alaska. He traveled extensively as well. He had a second career doing motorcycle repair.
In retirement he returned home to Fayette County and Washington C. H., where he could see his brothers and sons frequently and be cared for at the end of his life. His interests were genealogy and family history, firearms, and motorcycles.
Roberts Funeral Home in Washington Court House is handling arrangements. The memorial service will be Sunday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at Cedar Lodge, 1696 Flakes Ford Road SE, Washington C. H., OH. A reception will follow the service. Interment will be at a later date at Bloomingburg Cemetery.
